From “Bill and Ben”
Have you ever considered taking on an allotment? There are currently 4 available, of varying sizes and rentals of between £9 and £20 per year. Why not think about sharing with a friend or neighbour?
We have been sharing a large allotment for a year now and have learnt a lot about the different types of weeds on the site! This year we have put quite a lot of black plastic sheets down to help kill them. We did manage to grow some very successful crops including: – rhubarb, mange tout peas, raspberries, tomatoes, parsley, strawberries, broad beans and numerous courgettes (too many). We were proud to produce for our family Christmas dinner some potatoes and onions we stored as well as leeks, sprouts, butternut squash and parsnips.
This year’s growing season is only just at the start and plot holders are busy sowing parsnips, lettuce, broad beans and some even have early potatoes in already. The garlic is well on its way and the rhubarb looks promising. Some people are still harvesting leeks and brassicas, with purple sprouting broccoli ready soon if the pigeons have left any.
